I'm trying to figure out why autodiscover failed due to duplicate exchange aliases. What are aliases used for in Exchange 2007 and how are the involved in the mailbox lookup process? I really thought they were just a legacy feature for Exchange 2003 and earlier.
The situation was similar to the following. There's a red domain and a blue domain in the same forest. Exchange servers are in the Red domain. An Rsmith in red and an Rsmith in blue both had rsmith as an alias. The autodiscover process seemed to complete forrsmith@blue.com but kept prompting for a password until we changed his alias from rsmith to rsmith2.
I'm guessing that because the autodiscoversitescope variable was set to the same site asrsmith@red.com as a lookup for rsmith@blue.com found the red\rsmith alias but I really thought it would try to find the account by primary smtp address.
Any explanation would be appreciated.
