Transaction Log amount does not correspond with message tracking

$

Hi

On our Exchange 2010 SP2 Server we found that over the weekend about 15gb logfiles had been created.

I checked the message tracking. There is some traffic, but not that much. The smtp receive and send logs have a "normal" size. I also checked the mailboxes, but there is no abnormal growth, so no pst Import was done.

This is very suspect. I would like to know what happened, but I don't know where to search.

Any suggestions?

Exchange Unified Message in a different forest then mailbox server

Hi

Company B: Own forest, Exchange 2010 organization using Unified Messaging and Lync Server. Lync Server is principally used for phone calls and conferencing.

This company must transfer the mailboxes to the mother company B in a different forest.

Is it possible, to still run Lync and Exchange unified messaging in the forest of Company B, while the mailboxes are in the Exchange organization of Company A?

What are the requirements?

AoA Dear Friends i am having a problem regarding my windows server 2008 r2 domain controller.I installed a microsoft exchange 2010 and after some days it crashed but it leaved a lot of changes ,accounts ,groups etc in my domain controller.i want to revert those changes and how it will be done ???

Resource Calendar sharing with external company. some issues.

I need to enable any user in CompanyB to access a MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com. CompanyA and CompanyB have Federation setup and calendar sharing between users work fine. For the sake of simplicity, I use Anna@CompanyA.com and Bea@CompanyB.com below in my questions.

What I can't get to work is calendar sharing of the resource calendar (MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com) to CompanyB.

There are plenty of (kind of) workarounds, but with SP2 and easier Federation I thought it would be simpler. Nope...

Problem 1:

I can't get MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com to appear as a room resource in Outlook 2010 of Bea@CompanyB.com.

Q: Is that possible at all in any way?

Problem 2:

As Bea@CompanyB.com, I can open a calendar of Anna@CompanyA.com. First, Bea@CompanyB.com needs to request access and Anna@CompanyA.com needs to grant it.
Trying the same with Bea@CompanyB.com opens MeetingRoom@CompanyB.com won't work, because there is no user associated with the resource mailbox MeetingRoom.

Q: Is there a way to grant access automatically?

Problem 3:

As Bea@CompanyB.com inviting MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com to a meeting will not show the availability (because of the previous problem). Inviting Anna@CompanyA.com at the same time, will show her availability. I know, this is closely related to the problem above.

Q: Is there a way to show the availability of MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com like the availability of any user?

Problem 4:

Checking MeetingRoom@CompanyA.comwith Get-CalendarProcessing I see "AutomateProcessing: AutoAccept" and "ProcessExternalMeetingMessages: True" (Set-CalendarProcessing -Identity "MeetingRoom" -ProcessExternalMeetingMessages $true). Invitations sent from Bea@CompanyB.com inviting MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com will show up in the MeetingRoom calendar as tentative. Invitations sent from Anna@CompanyA.com inviting MeetingRoom@CompanyA.com will be p'rocessed correctly and an "Accepted:" message is sent back. The MeetingRoom has been correctly reserved.

Q: Apparently, "AutomateProcessing: AutoAccept" and "ProcessExternalMeetingMessages: True" do not work when a meeting request for a resource is received from CompanyB.com. Do I miss something here? What else do I have to enable?

Some things I have tried:

I have given Someuser@CompanyA.com full access rights and Send as... rights to MeetingRoom. Due to AutoMapping, MeetingRoom was mapped into Someuser's Outlook 2010. I could then see the access request emails from Problem 2 in the Deleted items folder. I can open the request, but unfortunately, the From: capability is greyed out. If I reply to that request, I just give access to Someuser's calendar...

I then enabled the MeetingRoom user in the AD and gave a password. I still could not Send as...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Exchange 2010 on server 2012 in a 2008 virtual disk

Is Exchange 2010 still un-supported when running in a 2008 R2 virtual machine with a dynamically expanding virtual disk on a 2012 server? I have set this up and it does not seem to be giving any problems. Should I be looking out for anything?

Exchange 2010, NFS, and NetBackup GRT

$

I have Exchange Server 2010 running as follows: EX1, EX2, and EX3 are physical servers and have the MB, HT, and CAS roles; EX4 is a virtual server with the HT and CAS roles.  EX1, EX2, and EX3 are in a DAG.  These span 2 sites.  We are successfully using NetBackup to back up the Exchange databases.

EX1 uses iSCSI to connect to NetApp luns for the drives with the Exchange databases and logs; EX2 and EX3 use local storage with the same drive letters used by EX1.

I want to start using GRT with NetBackup for single item recovery, which would require me to install "Services for Network File System (NFS)" role on the Exchange servers.  I have seen references that indicate that NFS is not supported for Exchange 2010.  Does that refer only to using NFS to access luns (which I am not doing), or does it mean also that I cannot have the "Services for Network File System (NFS)" role on the Exchange servers (and thus cannot use NetBackup GRT)?

Any information clearing this up will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Exchange SP2 UR3 install issue

Running Exchange 2010, single server install, SP2 and currently at UR2 level.

WU just tried to install UR4 and failed (with no definitive error code), while looking through the server I determine that its currently at UR2 level (in the updates list, it shows UR1 and UR2 for exchange).

I have no idea why WU tried to install UR4, but it did and so the first thing I tried was installing UR3 which failed at the same point, telling me nothing was installed but nothing more.

I looked online and found others have had issues with UAC and UR for exchange, so I tried installing UR3 via elevated command prompt - same issue.

One of the topics I found online mentioned that when the UR install was started from a non admin command prompt, and failed, the install did actually partially install and an uninstallation was needed before retrying the install via an elevated command prompt.

Since the last UR listed was UR2 I decided to try to uninstall this and then go through the UR's in order all via command prompt, this also failed BUT what was interesting here is that the dialogue shows the following (bear in mind this is when trying to remove UR2):

So when using the uninstaller for UR2, its actually trying to uninstall UR1!

Not sure what to do from here!

Address Book Policy - Distribution List Member's visibility

$

We are using Exchange 2010 in a hosted environment with Address Book Policies. The management policy groups all managers together in a shared GAL while also providing them access to other address lists of the child companies. There are several distribution lists within the management GAL that contain members from the child companies, the managers however are unable to see who these recipients are. Is there anyway to grant permissions so that visibility of Distribution Group members is available to these managers without removing them from there address book policy?

Thanks,

No autocomplete in OWA 2010

$

I did a bunch of research, but no answers.

This is a new Exchange 2010 Server. Previous mail server was Kerio on Mac OS.  Clients have had Outlook 2010 on both Kerio and Exchange.  I created new Outlook 2010 profiles for Exchange accounts, and brought over autocomplete file from old profile.  Each and every Outlook 2010 client now has properly operating autocomplete in their Exchange profile.

To confirm that the autocomplete had been stored in the users mailbox, I setup a users profile on another computer and confirmed by sending a new email that the entire users' autocomplete was there.  That would mean that the users' autocomplete had been stored in their mailbox.

However, when using OWA, logged in as that user (or any user), there is NO autocomplete.

What could the problem be?

Also, if autocomplete is stored in the users' mailbox, why is there an autocomplete stream file in the roaming cache folder?  Which is actually used by the Outlook client?  Both?

Hi,

I have 3 Servers with Multiple Roles on them, now I have introduced 3 more server to work as a separate Mailbox roles on them and have moved all the mailboxes from old servers to the new servers.

now I have to remove the mailbox roles from the old servers to dedicate them for HUB and CAS Roles and configure the NLB on them.

what could be the impact on those old servers or to the complete organization ? any harm in it ?

or do I have to reinstall the complete servers to the new again ?

Reverse Proxy solution for exposing Client Access Server (OWA, Outlook Anywhere...) other than MS Solution

$

Many folks have used ISA Server, TMG, and now UAG as reverse proxy to expose OWA, Outlook Anywhere and so on.

I am looking for known working alternatives that provide the same functionality.

I am not looking to debate whether to use a non MS solution or MS solution, but alternatives that are known to work.

Perhaps a Virtual Appliance.

Thanks for your input.

Hi everyone,

I'm using TMG 2010 as my internet proxy, i want guys using tablets(Ipads,Samsung) to use it to access corporate mails.

The challenge is, i can successfully setup active sync on the tablets using open internet but when they connect to the wireless @ my workplace and set the proxy they cant get mails until they connect back to the open internet.

What protocol do i need to allow on my proxy for them to get mails using the proxy internet?

Exchange and Domain Controllers

Per the Exchange Minimum System Requirements at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719(EXCHG.140).aspx

Global Catalog:  In each Active Directory site where you plan to install Exchange 2010, you must have at least one global catalog server

Domain Controller:  In each Active Directory site where you plan to install Exchange 2010, you must have at least one writeable domain controller

I was hoping to find a definitive answer to the following:

You need only one GC and writable DC per site.  However, what if your exchange server is in "company.com" and your GC/DC is in a child domain "child.company.com"?  The minimum requirement is per site, but it does not specify that it must be per domain as the exchange 2010 server.

The behavior I have been noticing is that for certain commands in the shell like "get-mailbox" I must use Set-AdserverSettings and set the -ViewEntireForest $True in order to see all Mailboxes.

My main concern is that now we are configuring BES and it seems to be having issues finding necessary AD objects as well.

Is there a way to force exchange to view the entire forest in all applications like powershell and make that permanent?  Could this behavior he causing issues with other applications as well such as BES?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Which mailbox is causing database content indexing to fail?

$

Exchange 2010 SP2

Content indexing on one database causes memory and CPU to max out on all DAG members. I have isolated the problem to a particular database.

  1. I stopped the search indexing service
  2. Created a new db and moved all of the mailboxes from the bad db to the new db.
  3. I then deleted the old DB along with its files.
  4. I turned off indexing on all databases and removed the old catalog files.
  5. I restarted the indexing service.
  6. I re-enabled indexing on one database at a time, waiting for each one to complete before starting the next one, saving the new db for last.
  7. About 1.5 hrs into indexing the new db, the memory usage and cpu maxed out on all dag members, essentially crashing the whole system.

Since the problem followed the mailboxes to the new db, I believe the problem must be with one or more of the mailboxes. There are no event log entries that appear relevant. Just messages about quota limits on archives and mailboxes, etc. Nothing that would indicate a problem indexing anything.

How do I find the problem mailbox?

Active Items in Mailbox Folder?

Is there a concept of "ActiveItems in Mailbox Folder" in Exchange 2010?

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics can get some info about the folders, but I could not find how to get ActiveItems in MailboxFolder. Actually, I'm not sure whether it is a valid concept in Exchange 2010.

Anyone know anything about this?

My boss wants to get a report for the Active Items in all Mailbox Folders, he got this ActiveItems from a report someone showed to him, and did not know what it means. Now, I have to figure it out, ....

thanks
